焼尻島に咲く花　オオマツヨイグサ　その2

太宰治は『富嶽百景』の中で、「富士には月見草がよく似合う」と書きましたが、そこで描かれている花も、実際にはオオマツヨイグサだといわれています。

この花には、もう一つ面白い特徴があります。
それは、夕暮れになると一斉に花を開くことです。

満天の星空の下、淡い黄色の花が静かに咲く姿は、とても幻想的です。
このことから、ドイツでは「ナハトケルツェ（Nachtkerze＝夜のろうそく）」と呼ばれています。

昼間はたくさんの花が咲き、昆虫たちを引き寄せる競争相手もたくさんいます。
そこでオオマツヨイグサは、あえてライバルの少ない夜を選び、静かに花を開くようになったのでしょう。

星空の下でひっそりと咲くその姿は、まるで夜を照らす小さな灯火のようです。

Large Evening Primrose – Part 2**

In his famous essay Fugaku Hyakkei (One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji), Osamu Dazai wrote,
“Mount Fuji looks best with a moonflower beside it.”
The flower he referred to, however, is believed to have been the Large Evening Primrose.

This flower has another fascinating characteristic:
as evening falls, its blossoms open all at once.

Under a sky filled with countless stars, these pale yellow flowers create a truly magical scene.
In German, the plant is called Nachtkerze, meaning “night candle.”

During the daytime, countless flowers compete to attract insects.
The Large Evening Primrose seems to have chosen a different strategy—opening its flowers at night, when there are fewer rivals.

Blooming quietly beneath the stars,
it looks like a small candle gently lighting the summer night.
